Tina Johnson's Fabric Art
Art That Tells Stories
I have been working with fiber for over 40 years, with the last six years devoted to full-time studio practice. Based in central Illinois, my relationship with fabric began at a young age and has grown into a deep passion for improvisational fiber art, which has been my primary focus for the past decade.
My work is created using a wide range of reclaimed and miscellaneous fibers, including upcycled linens, lace, silk, and remnants from a variety of sources. Each piece is an experiment—unique and unrepeatable—yet rooted in a consistent, intuitive process.
My art is almost entirely abstract and improvisational. Nature is my greatest source of inspiration—whether it is found just outside my front door, beneath the surface of the water, or in the vast mystery of outer space. These influences guide my color, texture, and movement.
Above all, I hope my work invites a genuine reaction. There is no right or wrong response—only an honest emotional connection, whether that feeling is joy, curiosity, discomfort, calm, or wonder.
Looking ahead, I plan to continue expanding my process by introducing new natural fibers, added elements, and layered textures into my future work.
